The Record: Boston’s Local Commercial Theatre, 1973– 2025

For half a century, Boston sustained a thriving local commercial theatre scene: productions that sat down in the city for months or years at a time, cast and crewed by performers, stage managers, and technicians who lived and worked here. Unlike touring productions, which play a week or two and move on, these shows stayed — and the wages, the taxes, and the careers stayed with them. At its peak, as many as five were running at once.

What follows is the record we have been able to document, organized by venue and listed in order within each.
